April 2009 Newsletter

Dear Parents,

Another term has come to an end and very sadly we have to say goodbye to Mrs Penketh, who will be starting her maternity leave. Mrs Silver, who some of you may remember taught previously in Year 1, will be covering Mrs Penketh’s class for the Summer Term. We would also like to congratulate Miss Wannenburg on her forthcoming marriage in the Easter holiday. She will be called Mrs Calitz on her return.

We are also sorry to say goodbye to Mrs May this term. She has been a valued member of staff for over 25 years and will be missed by the children, staff and parents alike for her help, generosity and sense of humour in the school office.

This has been a very busy half term and the children have enjoyed a day of Circus skills, Chinese Lion Dancing, Great Fire of London workshops, Toy workshops and the Healthy Eating sessions led by Mrs Bailey. It is always good to see so many parents helping & joining in with these events.

The competition for masks, magic wands and robots organised by Mrs Bassi as part of our World Book Day celebrations was very successful. The quality of the entries was extremely high and they have made a stunning display in the school hall. We are now enjoying seeing the entries for the Easter competitions displayed in the hall ready for judging by the class teachers.

We would like to thank Year 2 parents for your co-operation in not taking your children on holiday during the SATs after the Easter holiday. Can we take this opportunity to remind you that, as stated in our attendance policy, no school holiday absence will be authorised in September, so that all children will be able to make an easy transition into their new classes.

The staff have asked me to remind you of the things that we are collecting at the present time. We are collecting Tesco vouchers and we would like to order visualisers for all the classrooms. This will allow teachers to project work directly up onto the smartboards. They are very expensive to buy so we hope to collect as many vouchers as possible. In addition we are collecting Sainsbury’s vouchers, Nestles Boxtops and the Books for Schools vouchers found in the Times.

We continue to collect things for recycling including stamps, mobile phones and old printer cartridges.

There is continued concern among some parents that children are riding scooters and playing football on the school premises before and after school. There is very little room on the playgrounds at this time of the day so please have regard for the safety of other parents and small children and do not allow your children to use these things. Remember that your child and his/her behaviour is your responsibility before and after school and you should be aware of where he/she is and what he/she is doing at all times.

The ladies in the office would like to remind you again that milk and dinner money should be sent into school in different envelopes clearly marked with your child’s name. Envelopes are for sale in the school office at £2 for 40.

Healthy Schools
In Dec 2006 we achieved our Healthy Schools award. Over the next year we will be revalidating this award and we hope for your input, views and support as we undertake this. To achieve this we need to continue to fulfil 41 criteria in 4 different themes which are Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education, Healthy Eating, Physical Activity and Emotional Health and Wellbeing. Over the next few terms we will posting information and requests via our website, the newsletter and letters home so stay posted!

Eco committee
Members of the eco-committee are continuing their work towards attaining the eco-schools green flag award. The committee together with some of the Year 2 children recently planted trees received by us from the Woodland Trust in the school grounds. The children thoroughly enjoyed this activity and we are very grateful to the adults who helped with this.

Mrs Bailey and the ladies of the PTA organised a very successful ladies evening at the end of March. It was extremely well attended and raised over £200 for the PTA funds.

We would like to wish you a very happy Easter.

With best wishes
Mrs. Mooney and all the staff
