May 2008 Newsletter

Dear Parents,

We would like to welcome the parents of our new children to the Nursery. They seem to have settled in well and are making the most of all our Early Years facilities in the Nursery and the Rainbow room. For the first time for several years we are able to give the majority of our September 2008 intake of children an opportunity to enjoy the school facilities, such as the library and attend some our assemblies before they start school. This will enable their transition into the reception class to be a lot easier and less overwhelming.

The PTA has 3 big events planned for this term, the cake stall on 22nd May, Mr. Bounce Day on 18th June and the Fun Day on 21st July. If you are able to help with any of these events please contact Mrs. Bailey in the school office. She has very kindly agreed to become the new chair of the PTA committee and she would appreciate any help that you can offer.

We would like to warn all parents, but particularly those of you that might own your own local business of a scam that is being carried out nationally. A local company/shop is approached and asked if they would like to sponsor the purchase of books for a local school. It is a very high pressure selling technique which results in a business agreeing to give large amounts of money to purchase, what they believe, to be useful books for local children. The school is usually unaware that this has been done until the books arrive. The books are completely unsuitable and of no value to the school. The company will not take the books back nor refund the money to the local benefactor when requested to do so by the school. Our school has had first hand experience of this. The first time the parent who had been approached spoke to the school and were advised to have nothing to do with it. Unfortunately the second business didn’t speak to us first and we received a set of completely useless books that probably cost a great deal of money. We always appreciate any support that parents offer and we would not like to see anyone else being conned in this way. If anyone else has had a similar experience please let us know.

We would like to thank Mrs Chrysiliou for raising £500 for the school through the Royal Bank of Scotland. It was very much appreciated.

We are hoping that we will have the benefit of some sunshine in the near future. Can we remind you that:
• your child must have a hat in school, clearly marked with their name • sunscreen must be applied at home. You are welcome to come to the school office at lunchtime if you would like to give your child a second application during the day. • your child should wear tops with short sleeves – strappy tops are not suitable for school. • children must have a pair of plimsolls in school for out door PE. • children do take off jumpers etc when the weather is warm - please make sure that all clothing is clearly marked with your child’s name.

Mrs May would like to thank everyone who has so far taken part in the Mr. Men Leukaemia fund raising that she organises at this time every year. She has had an excellent response but has decided to extend the dead line for entries. So if you have taken part but not returned your envelope please send it in to school as soon as possible.

Please take care when walking with your children in the school car park and walk on the paths where possible. Do hold your child’s hand and do not allow them to run on ahead of you. Cars and lorries are coming in and out of the school grounds throughout the day and children need to be under constant supervision.

We have started the last round of Gold Award assemblies for this year so we look forward to seeing as many of you as possible. The children are so pleased to be able to share their achievements with their family. We are also going to have a grandparents’ afternoon for the children in Year 1 & Year R this term. They will be invited to an assembly and then invited into the classrooms to work with their grand daughter/grandson on a variety of activities organised by the class teacher.

This is a very busy term with a lot of events and trips planned, so please do look at the back of the newsletter and on the website to ensure that you don’t miss anything. We look forward to seeing you in school
