January 2008 Newsletter

Dear Parents,

The time has come to say goodbye to Mrs Silver. We look forward to hearing of the safe arrival of her baby and to meeting him or her very soon.

We are very pleased to welcome Miss Sullivan onto our staff. Miss Sullivan will be working with us until the end of the summer term

We hope to see as many parents as possible at our open evening on Thursday 7th February. The teachers will be available to see teachers in their classrooms, without children please, from 3.20-5.00 & 6.15 -8.00. Please be aware that Mrs Davey & Mrs Evans will be attending the 3.20-5.00 session only.

In addition Miss Hurry will be holding a meeting for Year 2 parents in the school hall at 6.00 and SATs workbooks will be for sale.

Mrs James will be available to see parents in the school hall throughout Open Evening. She has also arranged for representatives to be available to meet parents in the school hall from Tudor Cross Pre-School, Peter Barton from “Just for Dads”, Phillipa Hyams from the new Children’s Centre based in Waltham Abbey Library and WAVE – the Waltham Abbey branch of Loughton College further education for adults. Tea & coffee will also be on sale in the hall so we hope that you will take time to talk to people from these various agencies, look at their stalls and read their literature.

The children have enjoyed some very interesting visits this term. All the pupils have visited Waltham Abbey library, apart from the 2 reception classes who were unable to go because of the weather. Their visit has been rearranged for later this term. We were very grateful to the ladies at the library who made their time there so enjoyable. Environmental week was a big success and the visit of the Bugman was very well received by the children and those parents who joined their children for the extra session after school. Year 2 have been to the Science Museum which was very enjoyable, with lots of good investigative work taking place. Year R. have had an exciting session with staff from Harlow Museum, looking at toys from the past.

Staff have been approached by parents on occasion this term asking them to deal with incidents that have happened in the playground on their way to or from school. Can we please remind parents that you are responsible for your children before 9.00 and after 3.00. It is not appropriate for staff to become involved.
It would also be very helpful if parents did not remain on the school grounds after they have brought children into school. It can be very distracting for the children to see their parents outside the window, talking to other parents, when they are supposed to be settling down to start the day in class.

Mrs James & Mrs Bailey will be starting their parenting workshops on 26th February. We will also be sending out a separate letter with further information.

Some parents have mentioned to staff in the office that they would prefer to pay for milk and dinner money in half termly amounts. Administratively, for the TAs & office staff, this would be very helpful and would need far fewer individual payments to be made by parents. We will be sending out a letter with a tear off slip that will tell parents the cost of half a term’s milk and dinner money. Clubs should also be paid for in this way. We hope that you will find this idea helpful.

The school has achieved the bronze Eco-Schools’ Award and are working towards the silver. Our committee includes school staff, governors, parents and pupils and we meet regularly to work on the action plan. Our big project at the moment is to develop an eco garden at school. If you would like to find out more about what are doing, please have a look at our notice board in the school entrance, where you will find minutes from the meetings and a copy of the action plan. If you would be interested in helping us, for example by coming in to do gardening (possibly with the children’s help!) please see Mrs Kemp or Mrs. Harding.

We hope that as many of you as possible will be attending the Race Night, the fundraising event on Friday 8th February at 7.30 in the school hall, in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust. The brother of one of our pupils very sadly died of leukaemia just before Christmas and some of our parents wanted to help raise money in his memory, for a special teenage cancer unit. There are still tickets available and it should be a fun night for everyone involved. With best wishes to you all
